As a coach with a website, you get loyal followers when people feel an emotional connection to you and your content. If your readers connect to it, then it has as much of an impact on your credibility as the content you add. If you are genuine and your authenticity shows through in your content this connection will be natural to your “tribe”.
If you are a coach and have just launched your website, finding loyal followers is the first step to using your site to connect with potential clients who will want to work with you. Here are a few ideas to use when trying to figure out how to connect emotionally with your audience.
As a coach, it is important to share personal stories from your life, both success and failures that you have overcome. Tell your readers about the struggles you had with love or family, or about the time you staked everything on a business deal and lost it all or succeeded using a method you still use today.
Talk about your big blunders and your big triumphs. Talk about where you came from and your dreams of where you want to go. Letting your visitors into your life gives them a feeling of trust in you because you have shared something personal about yourself.
Talk about what got you into coaching and why you are so passionate about what you do. Reveal yourself to your readers. You can’t be in the coaching business asking people to open up to you and be afraid to open up to them. This is vital if you want to get loyal followers and readers on your coaching site.
Of course, you’ll always want to tie everything back to a lesson or a moral they can learn from the story. The best way to convey a message is usually through a relatable story. It shouldn’t be “about” you, but you can share aspects of yourself throughout the process of teaching a valuable lesson.
Milton Erickson is known as the originator of the “Pace, Pace, Lead” technique. He was one of the three therapists whose techniques were used to form today’s NLP techniques. Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) is a pseudoscientific approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy.
The “Pace, Pace, Lead” technique was the primary technique Erickson used with his clients to build trust and emotional connections. Using this technique, allowed him to get even the most resilient clients to trust him and open up.
Basically, start by pacing, or “following along” with your reader’s emotional state. If you are emotionally connected enough to describe their frustrations, their wants, and their emotional frame of mind to them, they will begin to see that you really understand them.
Only then when the trust has been built do you then try to “lead” them to where you want them to go: your course, workshop or coaching program where you want them to learn, a different emotional, financial or mental trick or method.
Your body language and facial expressions convey your emotions to other people when you are face to face even without saying a word. Over the phone, slight changes in your tone give people cues on how you’re feeling, even though they can’t see your face.
You can have this same effect with your writing. I get it, you hear about all the rules like SEO and keywords etc. and by the time you are done reading all the rules, you barely know where to begin. The point is if you are not being genuine when you are writing or you are not emotionally engaged, your visitors will know it.
If you’re really passionate about a subject, it’ll come through, you can worry about the rules after you write the content. If you’re genuinely angry about an injustice, people can tell. If you actually know, use, and love a product you’re endorsing, people will be able to feel that as well.
Written communication doesn’t convey emotion nearly as well as being face to face, but this human-to-human emotional link is not lost on your loyal following, even in writing. In other words, put yourself in a real emotional state before you start writing. Write during peak emotional moments while inspiration is at its peak. People can tell and they’ll connect with that.
Writing to connect emotionally with your readers takes more dedication and vulnerability on your part. It entails revealing more of yourself than if you were just writing factual articles. But that’s what it takes to get loyal followers. This is why most don’t succeed they forget to write from a place of passion so writing would be easy and flow.
Hope this helps you figure out how to write your next content and revamp the content you have. How do you connect emotionally? What techniques do you use? Share any tips you use for connecting with your audience, something you share might help someone else.
